2020 Colorado Flute Association Flute Fair

Alexa Still is known internationally primarily through her 20+ recordings that have garnered unanimous praise: “impeccable in technique and taste, seductive in phrasing” (Stephensen Classical C D Guide). “Still plays... so convincingly I cannot separate her from the music” (American Record Guide), “whatever she plays sounds musical in every turn of the phrase” (Gramophone), “a stunning showcase for the astonishing Alexa Still” (Fanfare). “Still showcases her exquisite lyricism and virtuosity on every track” Cleveland Classical.  Alexa got her doctorate in New York (SUNY Stony Brook), won competitions including the New York Flute Club Young Artist Competition, and, East and West Artists Competition and then at age 23, went back home as principal flute of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Other awards include a Churchill Fellowship and a Fulbright. Alexa left the NZSO to devote more time to solo engagements and teaching, based first at the University of Colorado at Boulder, then the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (where she was also director of Performance Research), and since 2011, the Oberlin Conservatory. Alexa has also performed as soloist in 16 countries, including many world premieres. Alexa’s articles have been read around the globe, and she has served her profession as President of the National Flute Association (USA). When her flute is in its case, Alexa is an avid motorcyclist. The 2020 Colorado Flute Fair will feature: 

A morning lecture workshop and masterclass as well as an evening solo recital by Alexa Still.

A Paris Conservatory Tradition: The Sightreading Examination Pieces - Nancy Andrew will  present a lecture-recital featuring 16 recently published works from 1873 to 1918 performed by members of the Colorado flute community. Come discover previously unknown gems by Pierne, Barthe, Pugno, Duvernoy, and others. 

Sandra Tiemens and Friends will present How to be a Valued Member of Your Flute Section - A panel discussion about general philosophies & specific techniques to be a powerhouse flute section

Jane Rigler will facilitate an introductory workshop for flutists of all ages and abilities that will explore the concepts of Deep Listening, imaginative exploration, improvisation, and collaboration. Everyone will explore in their own way through various listening, sounding, and movement activities. Come explore the instrument we all love in a new way! 

The final round of the Third Annual Young Artist Competition will take place during the Fair. Preliminary round will occur on Friday, October 23. Repertoire and application details will be announced over the summer. Alexa Still will serve as an adjudicator for the competition.

Playing opportunities for members will include the Member's Recital and Chamber Music Jam!
